Information received from John Humphreys, coroner for Middlesex. Inquest held 20 May 1876. Death registered 22nd May 1876

The inquest into the death of Richard Rose was reported in the 22nd May 1876 edition of ‘The Hackney & Kingsland Gazette & Shoreditch Telegraph’

FATAL FALL:- On Saturday, My Humphreys held an inquest at the Prince of Wales Tavern, Holywell-lane, Shoreditch on Richard Rose, 65, horsekeeper, in the employ of Mr Jacobs, cab proprietor, Filch-street, Whitechapel and living at 13 Batemans-row, Shoreditch. Paulina Goldberg, 2 Filch-street, Whitechapel found the deceased lying in the yard insensible on Good Friday morning. He said that while ascending the ladder to the loft he fell. He was removed home and attended by Dr Harle, until Tuesday last, when he died from pyoemia supervening on the injuries he had received on the head. Verdict: Accidental death

BLOOD POISONING

1. Septicaemia is met with in two forms:-
(a) Septic poisoning.
(b) Septic infection.
(a) Septic poisoning.- The effects produced by the absorption of a poisonous dose of the chemical products of germs without the germs being alive that elaborate these poisons. In this the symptoms must be directly in proportion to the dose absorbed, which dose cannot increase in the body.
(b) Septic infection.- The effects produced by the absorption of poisons of living infective germs. The symptoms here are not proportionate to the initial dose which may be infinitesimal and not lethal, but which, owing to multiplication of the germs in the blood and a corresponding increase of poison elaborated by their vital processes, leads to death sooner or later.
This naturally is of a graver character than the preceding.
2. Pyoemia.- Occurs in the same way as septic infection, but differs in its symptoms.
Prognosis.- In septic poisoning, if the dose is small, recovery is probable. In septic infection and pyoemia recovery is rare.
Causes.- Always due to absorption through some abraded surface, i.e., sores, scratches, heel cracks, abscesses. The poison may have been introduced by the weapon causing the injury or may have been absorbed subsequently from neglecting the wounds (a frequent cause).
Symptoms.- In all forms the following are the most frequent: repeated shivering often unnoticed, and sudden accessions of high fever, often followed by a fall of temperature sometimes to normal before the next rise, grave prostration and muscular tremors being marked symptoms, and towards the end foetid diarrhoea, occasionally there may be paralysis of the hind-quarters. The disease takes a rapid course, ending usually in death after a short period.
In septic poisoning no further symptoms are observed, but in septic infection there may be swelling of joints and collections of fluid in the body cavities (chest, belly), and in pyoemia abscesses scattered over the body and in the organs. The cause of the formation of these abscesses is as follows. In the case of many wounds veins are injured and this leads to the formation of blood clots blocking the lumen of the injured vessels. The clot may extend until it reaches a considerable collateral branch. The clot is adherent to the wall of the vessel except at its free end which protrudes into the blood current. Clots may soften and break down. Small portions are thus detached and carried by the circulation to distant parts. As a rule they are arrested at the bifurcation of vessels. At such points infective centres or foci for suppuration are formed. Thus, according to the seat of injury different organs-the lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen-may become the seat of numerous abscesses, which are usually small and wedge-shaped. Unlike septicaemia, pyoemia does not supervene till some days after the receipt of injury. In septic infection death occurs more rapidly than in the other two forms.

Catherine's inquest reported in the Hackney & Kingsland Gazette, 23 November 1900.
SUDDEN DEATH IN RICHMOND ROAD - Yesterday an enquiry was held by Dr Wynn Westcott at the Hackney Coroner's Court, concerning the death of Catherine Rose, aged 59, lately residing at 36 Richmond Road, Dalston.  Deceased, who was the wife of a french polisher, had been ill for the past week, but had not been attended by a doctor, as deceased objected to that course.  But on Wednesday morning she became worse, and told her husband she would have a doctor.  So later in the morning, when the husband had gone to work, deceased's daughter fetched the doctor, who, however, only arrived a few minutes before death occurred.  A post mortem examination revealed congestion of the lungs, and death was due to that affection.  Deceased had obviously put off medical attendance until too late.  A verdict was returned of 'Death from natural causes'.
1901 census
Richard – French Polisher - is living as a widow with his two daughters, Mary Ann and Esther at 36 Richmond Road, SW Hackney.

Inquest on Richard Thomas Rose

"There is a report in the Hackney Gazette of 12th June 1907 on the above inquest. The deceased had been staying at 148 Sandringham Road with his daughter, Mrs Esther Chapman, and her husband. He had been in the Hackney infirmary with bronchitis, and had been taken from there to Claybury suffering from insanity. After three weeks in Claybury he had been let out on trial, and a month later he had been discharged. Since then he had been living with the Chapmans, and had seemed "funny in the head". He had taken the poison on Hackney Downs and been taken by policeman to the nearby surgery of Dr. Daly, and from there to German Hospital."
